april is the cruelest month

Gruppenausstellung: April is the cruellest month

ATELIERFRANKFURT/ Hohenstaufenstr. 13 sowie dem haus nummer elf / Stoltzestraße

Vernissage: Fr. 25.04.08, 19 Uhr, ATELIERFRANKFURT e.V.

‘Saturday Afternoon, 1st of December, Leeds’

Invitation

To whom it my concern,

Please consider this an official letter of invitation to listen to a
broadcast of 'Saturday Afternoon, 1st of December, Leeds', a reading
by Zygmunt Bauman from Italo Calvino's novel 'Invisible Cities'. It
will be played on Resonance FM (www.resonancefm.com and 104.4FM in
the London area), on Monday, 14th of April 2008, at 16:30 (London
time). If possible, use headphones.

Sincerely,
Anna Ostoya

P.S.
Zygmunt Bauman is Emiritius Professor of Sociology at the University
of Leeds and the University of Warsaw. He is author of books about
'heavy' and 'solid', hardware-focused modernity and a 'light' and
'liquid', software-based modernity. 'Liquid times' is a term he
introduced to describe post-modern life, which main characteristic is
ambivalence and increasing feelings of uncertainty. According to
Bauman the product of modernisation deriving from economic progress
and order building is human waste: a superfluous, unusable being, a
redundant human, such us an unemployed person or a refugee. His
favourite authors are Robert Musil, George Perec, Jorge Luis Borges
and Italo Calvino. In 'Wested Life' and 'Liquid Love' he uses
fragments of Italo Calvino's book Invisible Cities as a references
and a metaphor for his theories.

Italo Calvino was an Italian writer and a journalist. 'Invisible
Cities', published in Italy in 1972 is a novel containing
descriptions of 55 cities, which are told by the main character Marco
Polo, the young Venetian traveller to Kublai Khan, the old Tartars'
emperor. Khan is curious to hear about the places he owns, but has
never visited and to engage himself in philosophical conversations
with his visitor. The cities in Marco's narration are not real
places, but they contain features of urban life and organization,
which though taking different forms in different places and epochs,
seem universal.

"People clapped. They leaped up and down. Some removed their outer clothes. A fit of shaking passed over the group. Some shakers bowed down. Others were doubled over. Feet and hands linked, as they rolled on the floor. They rolled over and over, like wheels, or like rolling logs. Some got down on four legs, like dogs, growled and barked. Carnal mortification freed the shaker from false pride."

For Essentials of the Film

For Essentials of the Film
Mikio Saito and Youngho Lee

Exhibition: 5th - 12th April
Private View: 4th April, 7pm~

Performance is to project the 16mm film with loop structure, and
during the projection we make scratch directly on the film. This is
not for destruction or reconstruction of the work, but the last step
to complete this film work.

Our film has just two kind of pictures, that are solid white and
black, and has no sound. We make the sound by scratching the magnetic
part of the film to correspondent with the pictures (White pictures
to sound, Black pictures to silence) at the same time during the film
pojection.
These four essentials are realised by one of the very important
avante garde film maker, Peter Kubelka (b.1934, Austria) 's film
called "Arnulf Rainer", in which film he tried to reduce the cinema
to the four essentials,
"Licht(light)" "Dunkel(dark)" "Ton(sound)" "Scweigen(Silence)"
and wrote scores like music.
We compose our film with black and white pictures. In the beginning
of projection it will be an incomplete film, then by our scratch
improvisation, silent film will have noise sound gradually, and at
end, it will become the film, which has four essentials.

The Japanese artist Mikio Saito and the Korean artist Youngho Lee who
since already some while cooperate as artist duo, are showing works
together in several exhibitions mainly in europe. This is their first
solo show in UK. Live and work in London and Berlin.

Motoko HIrayama
Shimpei KAWAI
Koichi WATANABE,
Ichiro OKADA
Tamotsu SUEMOTO

Ausstellung: Künstlerhaus Mousonturm Frankfurt am Main GmbH
Waldschmidtstraße 4

Donnerstag 03.04. 15:00-19:00 Uhr
