April Gertler - They are what they seem. GALERIERAUTENSTRAUCH

Exhibition: They are what they seem. // Frankfurt am Main, Germany
GALERIERAUTENSTRAUCH

//

They are what they seem.

Opening:
SATURDAY, 27. SEPTEMBER, 4 -6.30pm

The project, “They are what they seem“, was started in the Spring of 2007 while I was simultaneously working on a few other projects. It became a “side project” that was meant to provide a place of comic relief that was rooted in my observations and meanderings of my daily life, but it very quickly became more.

The idea behind “They are what they seem“ stems from an ongoing fascination I have with the found snap shot. The project evolved from careful observations I have been making of a huge collection of snap shots I have been collecting and how they respond to my current life. I started to notice how parts of the images could be directly translated into events that I was currently experiencing. Although the images are mostly from the 1940’s and 1950’s – I find that these simple photographic moments are familiar even though the times are different and I don’t know the people in the photos.
The combination of text and image is an integral part of the work. The text weaves in and out of banality, poignancy and at times hilarity. It is based, not only on observations but also, on personal experiences, in addition to made-up events or things that I sometimes over hear. In many ways, the text brings the images to a place of momentary contemplation which blurs the lines between history, memory and contemporary life.

A special edition titled; Walking by., will be available for this exhibition.

GALERIERAUTENSTRAUCH

They are what they seem.

SAMSTAG, DEN 27. SEPTEMBER VON 16 - 18h30

„If Only (2001-)“, die sich ausschließlich fotografischer Mittel bedienen.

Bild Ausgangspunkt ihrer Arbeit, so tritt in „The Second Bite of the Cherry“, das gezielte Aufstöbern von Familiengeschichten in den Vordergrund.

The aim of this project is to refer to the roots of Performance by investigating into the life of the French writer, morphine addict and psychiatry patient Antonin Artaud. All participants will live for the duration of the exhibition in the gallery space and develop the outcome in an intimate and psychotic atmosphere, which can and should be interrupted by the public. The end of the show is the first presentation of the final dramatic result.
