Ausstellung/Exhibition #2: Dani Gal - Chanting Down Babylon

Halle fuer Kunst cordially invites you to

Exhibition #2:

Dani Gal - Chanting Down Babylon

29th March - 10th May 2009
Opening: Saturday 28th March 2009, 7pm

Location: Halle fuer Kunst Lueneburg eV, Reichenbachstr. 2, D-21335
Lueneburg

The source materials in the works of Dani Gal (born 1975, Israel) are historical documents, media reports and interviews, which he transforms and updates into spatially filling, formally-reduced sound, image and video installations for the purpose of questioning their putative explicitness. He directs his interest particularly to individual voices in the polyphonic process of narrating and in the visibility accrued of the subjectivity and fictional character of specific past events. The gaping hole between the event and its current presentation which appears in this process is at the foreground of Gal's investigations – a gap which persistently oscillates between the collective and subjective memory between the event itself and that of its documented vidences.

The Berlin residing artist Dani Gal was born in Jerusalem in 1975. Following his studies in the visual arts at the Bezalel Academy for Art and Design in Jerusalem, Gal studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Kuenste Staedelschule, Frankfurt/Main and the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. Further to group shows at the Kunstmuseum Bonn (2008), the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin (2008), the Portikus Frankfurt/Main (2007), the Kunsthalle Exnergasse (2006), the Kunsthaus Baselland (2006) and the Halle fuer Kunst Lueneburg (2006), in 2008 Gal was awarded the Villa Romana Prize. At the moment he is a stipendiary of the Kuenstlerstaette Schloss Bleckede.

For the exhibition curated by Eva Birkenstock and Hannes Loichinger a
publication in the form of an artist book is to be published by
Argobooks Berlin which has been designed in close cooperation with
graphic artist Florian Lambl (Berlin). It is due to be published in
May 2009.

Simon Dybbroe Møller: "Appendix"

The first comprehensive solo exhibition of the Danish born artist Simon Dybbroe Møller (*1976) will be held in Germany at the Frankfurter Kunstverein in collaboration with Kunstverein Hannover. In his drawings, photographs, sculptures, videos, interventions and installations, he looks for perfection within the accidental and evokes the imperfect within precision. For the exhibition at the Frankfurter Kunstverein he developed two new works. In an spatial installation he makes the "afterglow of modernism" traceable with an example of the light works of Minimal artist Dan Flavin, while other sculptural works are reminiscent of with the geometrical forms of the asian puzzle game Tangram. A publication will be published in cooperation with Kunstverein Hannover.

The exhibition "Appendix" ist the continuation of the parallel solo exhibition"Kompendium" by Simon Dybbroe Møller at the Kunstverein Hannover (March 14th – May 17th, 2009). A catalogue will be published in cooperation with Kunstverein Hannover.

Kostis Velonis' (*1968, lives in Athens) is presented for the first time in Germany with an expansive installation on the upper floor of the Kunstverein. The substantial work consisting of various sculptures will generate suspenseful gaps, leaving space for the events to be staged by the Kunstverein and for two further exhibitions by other artists, which will be inserted later. It will hence provide a frame and stage for the entire 2009 programme of the Kunstverein. The works of the three artists and their coordinated succession will gradually consolidate into a thematic whole. In this manner the year's project will not only involve visitors in an on-going development process but also render its emergence transparent.

He combines found materials into fragile and autonomous sculptures whose point of departure lies in the failure of modern utopias. From Russian Constructivism to the Bauhaus and the 1968 movements, he takes up the grand narratives and edifices of ideas, carrying them over into subnarratives of personal struggles, passions, and solitude. Literary figures like Don Quixote serve as models for melancholy heroes amidst lost dreams of revolution. For Velonis, failure goes beyond the negative element of resignation, offering a possibility of linking great goals back to the subject. Even though sorrow and loss are always present, aspiration remains a driving and poetic force in his works.

Tatiana Trouvé (*1968, lives in Paris) opens her "Bureau of Implicit Activities," one of her extensive sculptures with which she has been occupied for years (since 1997), in the ground floor gallery. The bureau, a model-like sculpture composed of various modules, has grown out of disappointments, opportunities, advances, and rejections, and hence of innumerable ideas that had ground to a halt in the midst of applications, waiting, and bureaucratic work. Energy fields constitute the space of her works, which persist in unresolved tension. Whereas Velonis's works are projection surfaces for utopian projects and collective interests, Trouvé's works are displays of individual wishes and dreams, while implying the resistance with which they meet in the form of standstill and reserve, telling of the persisting struggle to establish a platform for realisation.

In the entrance area, Daniel Milohnic (*1969, lives in Frankfurt am Main) has placed a highly distinctive visual image. The "Sleeping Buddha" will accompany the entire annual programme, standing for the educational concept of the Kunstverein. The purpose is to capture the interest of people from various strata of society who generally have little to do with art. The focus is on accommodating a lack of knowledge about contemporary art, with the aim of addressing all ages and micro-communities in the city. With its vast dimensions, the sculpture changes perceptions of spatial proportions, transforming the foyer into an exhibition space.
