M/L ARTSPACE PRESENTS "NAIL US"

UNISEX SALON

All those material inclinations and brutal appetites, which oppose with so much obstinacy and vehemence the practice of good, the soul is freed from through the aesthetic taste; and in their place, it implants in us nobler and gentler inclinations, which draw nearer to order, to harmony, and to perfection… –F. Schiller, The Moral Utility of Aesthetic Manners

Considering the far-reaching applications of image maintenance today, what better place to confront the indeterminate frisson of the contemporary arts – and bourgeois notions of cultural value – than in the space of the salon? Here, in the Bed-Stuy BID, this intimate and rarefied space is taken to be pedagogical, dialogical, pleasurable, potentially transformative. Forget the non-exclusive audience; the UNISEX SALON is our non-exclusive paradigm, operating along lines parallel to art's market economy without betraying the grace of creative expression or the dignity of elevated feeling, uninhibited by fe/male dualism and retrograde taste. In the cosmetic world, skill and genius are required in equal measure for survival; selling is not inevitably selling out. The ephemerality of material forms – plaits, extensions and acrylic nails in two-to-four week cycles – interlace biological features and synthetic invention, yielding fluid identities unhinged from mainstream representation and generic desire. Beauty is in the being of the whatever-singularity, reflecting back to each gaze a different look.

If the Salon des Refusés encouraged the modern artists to experiment with the boundaries of stylistic classification, then this salon of acquiescence staged for the second iteration of M/L Artspace similarly breaks the hermetic seal on the lame aesthetic hegemony of the so-called high arts, and in doing so, lays the groundwork for a latent political project cutting across class and gender lines. Why not reconfigure the Wages for Housework Campaign to address the endemic social demands of 21st Century image production, a category of living not only confined to art?

With contributions by Anne Lina Billinger, Thomas Cap de Ville, Tyler Dobson, Lena Henke, Lisa Holzer, Sergej Jensen, Marie Karlberg, Morag Keil, Daniela Leder, Emily Sundblad, Stewart Uoo, Jean-Michel Wicker, Cajsa Von Zeipel.

This is hard work, so look your best in solidarity. Get nailed: come correct.

Shabby Chic

Mechanical Tension > Bioelectric Charge > Bioelectric Discharge > Mechanical Relaxation

The question of things existing only in my head is still troubling me. What is in my head is not a burning forest, but a painting of a burning forest. With swirls. And with anxiety in it. Though a certain amount of anxiety may be about that the painting will not sell. But I am not seeing the painting itself, but a reproduction of it and a caption, saying Soft Wear. Though there is no painting of a burning forest called Soft Wear anywhere. Not even in my head, since as I said in my head is only a reproduction of that painting.

I rarely did portraits. All of my paintings are now in those galleries in this Museum I can't remember the name. What I did was stand them between various canvases in the permanent collection. Some overlapped those others at their lower corners. A certain amount of warp has occurred since. Most likely from having been leaning for so many years rather than being hung. Glamorously hanging out.

Eaten up by societal consensus, when dying, he is, for the first time, in a state of truth. The reinvention of what it means to be responsible one might call smart weirdness. How he likes the movement of his ass, trapped in an endless cycle. Discussions of the park, assiduously audited, in terms of popularizing something, frame a curtained corner. In the farthest reaching negation, stories oscillating between make and be made and quote unquote: anxieties are exposed.

One may fight to stay alive, to overcome addictions or jealousies. Others fight for power, for prestige and influence. There are play fights, staged fights, bets on fights, there are plethora’s of categories for a fight; separate, together, in gangs. There are fights that are over before they’ve even started, there are the Knock Outs, the TKO’s, brutal beatings, humiliation, ultimate champions and the even more severe fights to the death – there is war and peace. If we investigate the circumstances beyond more than the explicit posturing, we notice the simple fact of the possibility of there actually being something worth fighting for, something up for grabs, something, whatever it may be, to be discovered, experimented, engaged, interpellated.

Two ideas, modes, sets, sensitivities or sensibilities combined from separate creative entities could exponentiate and/or exacerbate meanings, situations, values, categories - affectively, efficiently - thereby opening horizons for further investigations, ways of examining, aligning, realigning, misinterpreting, rule-design breaking, parameter (un)setting. There is a significant pile of chance...

Finissage der Ausstellung Echo Release

Finissage der Ausstellung Echo Release:
Diskussionsrunde und Katalogpräsentation
Sonntag, den 24. November ab 16 Uhr
im Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden

Mandla Reuter, No Such St., 2013

Farina Inga Petzold, Wissenschaftliche Volontärin Bildende Kunst in Potsdam
Amalia Barboza, Künstlerin, Stipendiatin der HKST 2014, Brasilien
Und Andreas Diefenbach, Künstler, Stipendiat der HKST 2013, Paris

Moderiert wird die Diskussion von Anna Eschbach und Aurélia Defrance, Kuratorinnen der Ausstellung Echo Release.

George Rippon. Hacks around my Table

George Rippon
Hacks around my Table
22.11 - 22.12.2013
Opening Friday 22 November at 5 - 8 pm

"The Roman rooftop terrace parties in The Great Beauty show a culture that is blocked, resigned, embalmed in elegant decline, where some seek [salvation] and others [release], and intellectuals talk endlessly about what’s wrong and yet inertia overwhelms all forward momentum…” [1]

We sit divided before you. The writer, here, believes in work, the steady engine that pulls them along. As well, there is the hack lurking over there. They believe in down time, that time for doing nothing. Have friends over, play cards, catch up on gossip, watch TV, pet a cat. By nature, they are fairly good company, and make interesting dinner partners. That they remain loyal to their engine, no matter how quietly it hums along to the murmurs of the other, is no easy job.

This is the third time you’ve worked with Servillo now [the first being 2001's One Man Up]. What’s it like working together?

I wouldn’t really know how to describe it now because, having known each other for such a long time, the whole process is sort of an automatic thing. But it’s based on the fact that we get along very well. We share the same sort of ideas. We have a common view of things and that’s very, very useful. [2]

Henrik Olai Kaarstein ‘Mothers’

Henrik Olai Kaarstein
'Mothers'

Opening November 16 2013, 7 pm
November 16 2013 – January 31 2014
T293, Via Tribunali 293, Naples
T: +39 (0)81 295882
The big thought is hard to deal with. Man creates. A small room is established in infinite space.

A room filled with anaesthetizing narrations and furnished with consenting objects.

Henrik Olai Kaarstein's works for the exhibition 'Mothers' at T293 address needs for corrective guidelines. In the works, powerful resources and will are used to lay bare and point out the existence of repressed information.

The works conceive, in the various textile surfaces, character of something unable to be present in the original fresh perfection. Information in the underlying elements dominates what can be sensed in the final work and the manifestation of this underlying information is plain and simple. Primitive configurations, sharp strokes, shiny layers, spots of colour and folds are experienced as exquisite and precise tools.

Kaarstein's textile works for the exhibition can be seen as dialogue medium for what to catch. Or maybe more precisely, monologue catalyst for seeking and selecting. The exhibited works have simple basic materials – towels and thin mattress protectors – but the final works span from everyday material simplicity via vibrating nearness to trembling intimacy. Just the way the towels hang make them more thoughtful and severely present than many of the surrounding objects in everyday rooms. When added the surface landscape they are perceived as almost emotionally seductive. Variations in the intensity of the expression make alteration in the suggestive vibrations and do not fixate specific goals or a style.

The materialization in the works perceives without disturbing will in the composition. As the grain of sand gets its place in the desert landscape, so the material elements get their place in the works. The surface and motifs appear with evolutionary and organic morphology and express the will to be connected. Not as visual fragments of super graphic, but as seeking out links both to basics and to eternity. This search for material surfaces with communicative qualities beyond the visual is felt as important and liberating, and is determinant for the processes used to arrange the works' elements.

The works Kaarstein creates on these limited surfaces is an expression of all-embracingness and this can be seen as a summarizing statement. The work is free from obtrusive 'instructive' content. The complexity expresses balance and powerful stillness. The extensive visual information is experienced as bearing a comprehensible message for seeking and desiring.

The great activity going on inside the small room is obscure and full of prejudiced longings.

Imagine a film. What you see is a sailboat on a river. Looking at the sailboat you know that implicit to the situation is a downstream waterfall. The approaching chaos has not yet registered to those upon the vessel.

In the opening sequence we watch an air freshener twirl like a disco ball from a rear view mirror. The nature of the vehicle remains unclarified while attention is split between an out of focus marina and drama in the parking lot.

The air freshener depicts a waterfall but smells like burnt hair. It is a hilarious novelty. Over the course of the film it will come up more than once in conversation.

KERN: Site-specific installations in the park of the Leonhardi foundation by Adam Fearon and Filippa Pettersson.
On searching by leaving and making when unravelling.

The German word 'Kern' translates in English as 'Kernal'. The kernal is the softer, usually edible part of a nut, seed, or fruit stone contained within its hard shell, or the seed and hard husk of a cereal, especially wheat. The Figurative sense of "core or central part of anything" was first recorded in the 1550s. Whilst, since the 1980s, it can also mean the most basic level or core of an operating system of a computer, responsible for resource allocation, file management, and security. The word comes from the Old English word, 'cyrnel', which itself from Proto-Germanic 'kurnilo' (see for example Middle High German kornel and Middle Dutch cornel). This comes from the root of 'corn' with an -el, diminutive suffix. In old English, 'corn' meant 'grain with the seed still in it' rather than any particular plant and stems from the Proto-Germanic 'kurnam', meaning "small seed" from Proto-Indo European root 'gre-no', 'grain'. Locally, 'corn' was understood to denote the leading crop of a district. Restricted to the indigenous "maize" in America (first use recorded 1600, originally 'Indian corn', but the adjective was later dropped), and then usually wheat in England, oats in Scotland and Ireland, while Korn means "rye" in parts of Germany. Maize was introduced to China by 1550, it thrived where rice did not grow well and was a significant factor in the 18th century population boom there. Cornflakes first recorded 1907. Corned beef so called for the "corns" or grains of salt with which it is preserved; from verb corn "to salt" (1560s). The American slang, 'To cornhole', synonymous with "do anal intercourse" by 1930s, apparently the reference is to a game played in the farming regions of the Ohio Valley in the U.S. from 19c., in which players take turns throwing a small bag full of feed corn at a raised platform with a hole in it. Additionally, the word nucleus, first attested in 1704 as meaning 'kernal', and in 1708 as the 'head of a comet' comes from the latin for kernal, 'nuclueus', which itself from nucula "little nut," diminutive of nux "nut," from Proto-Indo European *kneu- "nut" (related to Irish 'cnu', Welsh 'cneuen', Old Norse hnot etc). General sense of "central part or thing, about which others cluster" is from 1762. Use in reference to cells first recorded 1831. Modern atomic meaning is 1912, first by Ernest Rutherford, though theoretical use for "central point of an atom" is from 1844, by Victorian scientist Michael Faraday. In English, first attested in the 1680s, 'kern' means the 'part of a metal type projecting beyond the body," as the head of an -f- or the tail of a -j-, from French carne "projecting angle, quill of a pen," from Latin 'cardinem' "hinge." There is an additional historical meaning of the word, 'kern', from the Irish ceithern, both meaning 'band of foot soldiers.'
