Zu Gast: Alexander Matthies (Raum auf zeit GmbH)

Am 28.5. wird Alexander Matthies einen Einblick in seine Arbeit als Initiator und Vermittler von Zwischennutzungsprojekten geben. Aufgrund des Umbauprojektes am Stuttgarter Hauptbahnhof weist das dortige Innenstadtgebiet eine günstige Situation für temporäre Nutzungen auf. Anhand einer Präsentation seiner Projekte mit anschließendem Gespräch erläutert der Architekt und Ingenieur Matthies Vorgehensweisen und Hürden im Bezug auf die Gewinnung und Umwandlung von Leerstand in Stuttgart.

Modernisierungskonzepte, Strukturwandel und ökonomische Entwicklungen haben in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten ihre Spuren in deutschen Innenstädten hinterlassen. Leerstehende Büroflächen, die nicht mehr den modernen Anforderungen genügen und deren Zukunft ungewiss ist, können durch sinnvolle Nutzungsmodelle aktiviert werden. Welche Bedürfnisse die breit gefächerte Mieterschaft aus Start-Ups und Kreativen an diese Objekte stellt und welche möglichen Nutzungsformen sich in unterschiedlichen Konstellationen ergeben, soll an diesem Abend diskutiert werden.

Im Austausch mit dem Publikum werden Parallelen zur Situation in Frankfurt und Offenbach gezogen, spezifische Aspekte temporärer Nutzungen im Bestand diskutiert und daraus resultierende Konsequenzen für kreative Arbeitsmodelle ausgelotet.

Eyvind Kang is considered one of the most adventurous and peripatetic musicians of his generation. As a composer and multi-instrumentalist, he has released many recordings of his music, including Grass (2012 Tzadik), Visible Breath, (2012 Ideologic Organ/Editions Mego), and The Narrow Garden (2011 Ipecac). His pieces have been performed by the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Coro da Camera di Modena, Embut Ensemble Barcelona, Seattle Chamber Players, and many others. He has also written scores for theater and film, and worked extensively as an arranger in jazz, rock, and post-metal. As a violist he has performed with illustrious musicians such as Jessika Kenney, Bill Frisell, and Laurie Anderson. He was recipient of the Jack Smith Award from the Hips Road Foundation in 2000, and the Artist Trust Arts Innovator Award in 2011.

Jessika Kenney (b. 1976 in Spokane, WA) is a vocalist and composer/improviser supported by a devotion to the living practice of the traditional vocal arts of Classical Persian Avaz and Central Javanese Sindhenan. Her on-going, genre-defying collaboration with multi-instrumentalist and composer/arranger/improviser Eyvind Kang has been described as "work of delicate beauty" and includes 2011 and 2013 releases on the Ideologic Organ label curated by Stephen O'Malley.

Kenney has performed the vocal works of John Cage, Lou Harrison, and Tadao Sawai, as well as collaborating with many current composers and conceptualists on vocal music. Connecting back to her roots in punk performance, in recent years she been involved in recording for experimental rock and minimalist offshoots of metal genres. Her own compositions focus on the translation of melodic nuance and revelatory atmospheres found in classical poetry. Kenney studies and performs Classical Persian music with Ostad Hossein Omoumi and teaches voice at Cornish College of the Arts.

The exhibition 'Crema di mente' is the result of artistic and experimental research stemming from a trip taken to Naples in 2012 by a group of students of the Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main.The exhibition is inspired by the ideas of Claude Lévi-Strauss in his book "The Savage Mind" in particular the analysis of the concept of bricolage and the structure of the wild thought. That is the attempt to immediately reorganize available signs and events at hand into a new structures.

'Crema di mente' is a project by the students of Judith Hopf developed in collaboration with the curator Francesca Boenzi. The exhibition is part of Maggio dei Monumenti 2013 and will be open from 24 May to 1 June 2013. The exhibition will be accompanied by the second issue of Rivista Apparente, a publication project initiated in 2013 by Anna Haas and Corrado Folinea.

SEVEN SWANS perspectives is pleased to present the Los Angeles based artist Arjuna Neuman. "So this is Heimat" is the fourth exhibition of the perspectives series and Arjuna Neuman's first solo presentation in Frankfurt.

Arjuna Neuman's work starts with research: "Each project examines the connections between subjects and across ideas. Sometimes the distance between parts is too great and the work collapses. Other times a cluster of thinking, materials and actions make up an esoteric system full of feedback loops and false starts. In our age of the hyper-networked, these systems attempt to describe reality, current power structures and the histories of today."

Neuman takes the authenticity of a specific place as point of departure for an artistic process. The story of So this is Heimat begins at Frankfurt am Main Airport. In the course of Neuman's research, the alleged stability of this geographic terra firma eventually proves to be ambiguous, unresolved - dangerous drift sand. In Arjuna Neuman's topology every place is shrouded by a dense network of narrations - whether official histories and alleged truths, or popular imaginations and private experiences. Frankfurt am Main Airport is haunted by the story of Naimah. Naimah, the Algerian refugee, who committed suicide in May 2000. For more than seven months she had been held in the airport's Transit Area Detention Centre, a space considered as 'exterritorial', non-national terrain - a strange, vague 'no-place'.

The airport is an uninhabitable, transitional space. Its pretentious glass and steel construction is designed to subtly compel travellers not to rest, but to keep moving - through squares, up and down escalators, through security checks, visible and invisible thresholds and gates of various kinds. Even in the purposefully cozy atmosphere of the Frankfurt am Main Airport Hotel - with its carpets carefully absorbing the sounds of our steps - we can't help but sense that this temporary retreat will only make us feel at home for one night. Apart from the fleeting presence of the passersby, the vast space of the airport seems intrinsically empty. There is just the faint, incessant squealing of the escalators, which transport travellers with equal indifference as luggage carousels carry bags and suitcases on and on in endless circles. Naimah becomes the allegory of a structural paradigm - the paradigm of haunting, of an unfulfilled, restless longing for home: Heimat.

In Arjuna Neuman's psycho-geographical mapping, Frankfurt am Main Airport turns into a purgatory of compulsive repetition and eternal return, in which histories, anecdotes and involuntary observations form a hidden web of haunting correspondences. Looking out of the window of the hotel room, we may - from the corner of our eyes - intuitively recognize this structure: In the dark curtains and their irresolvable entwined, repetitive ivy ornaments.

Arjuna Neuman (*1984 in Yeovil, UK) studied art at the California Institute of Arts in Los Angeles and English Literature at the University of California Davis. In 2011 he initiated "Concord", a Los Angeles based platform for exhibitions, discourse and international encounters as an ongoing socially engaged, transgressive art project (www.concordspace.com). Recent solo exhibitions: "VideoRow" (Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles, 2012), "In Our Sights" (Machine Project, Los Angeles, 2012), "Breaking and Entering" (Human Resources, Los Angeles, 2012). Upcoming exhibition: "Transpositions" (Verge Gallery, Sydney, 2013). Arjuna Neuman lives and works in Los Angeles.

"suggestions" sind minimalistische kompositionen auf papier, großzügig und präzise inszeniert. teils absurd-humoristisch – teils melancholisch und märchenhaft filigran. die für diese ausstellung eigens kreierten wandobjekte durchbrechen forsch die grenzen der zweidimensionalen bildwelten und platzieren sich spielerisch auf der schwarzen pavillonwand.

der gebürtige schwede studierte 2007 - 2012 an der hfbk städelschule bei michael krebber. seine arbeiten wurden bisher auf nationalen und internationalen artshows ausgestellt.

Die Mittwochsbar in Basel war etwa ein Jahr lang (jeweils am 1. Mittwoch im Monat) eine kleine befreite Insel. Die beiden Musiker Papiro und Markus Stähli waren dabei Gastgeber, Barpersonal, DJs und Live-Musiker in einem – oft auch gleichzeitig. Manchmal waren sie auch Publikum. Beschwerden wegen Lärmbelästigung sorgen dafür, dass sie in Basel vorerst ihren Betrieb aussetzen müssen. Darum feiern sie den Eklektizismus und die genüssliche Entsorgung von Hörgewohnheiten nun einmalig freitags.

Gerechtigkeit ist zum hohlen Pathos verkommen. Die Schuldenkrise. Die Finanzkrise. Die Währungskrise. Die Bankenkrise. Die Saatenkrise. Die Wasserkrise. Die Staatenkrise. Alles ist bankrupt. Vieles erglänzt noch immer im Hohlraum smarter Phones. Weniges bleibt rein und leuchtet in die Vergangenheit und die Zukunft aus einem kristallinen Jetzt. Die Ohnmachten werden stärker. Migräne und Kapillardepression. Spaltungen. Verwaltungen. Spaltungen. Wachsende Ertragsgebirge, die uns begraben. Die Verwertungen sind weiter gegangen. Die Lagergrenzen wurden verschoben, sie liegen in unsichtbarer Ferne. Die Gebiete sind in neuer Hand. Die fressenden Spiralen des SUV-Denkens sind verworrener denn je. Athens, 1821. 2013. The atmosphere is charged. Everything is decaying. The elites have failed. The financial war takes its toll on tomorrow's children. Fairness has deteriorated into hollow pathos. The debt crisis. The financial crisis. The currency crisis. The banking crisis. The seed crisis. The water crisis. The state crisis. Everything has gone bankrupt. Much still gleams in the hollow of smart phones. Few things remain pure and illuminate the past and the crystallised Now that is the future. Impotence intensifies. Migraines and capillary depression. Rifts. Bureaucracies. Fissures. Perpetually growing mountains of revenue bury us beneath them. Exploitation has proceeded unabated. Camp demarcations have shifted into the invisible distance. Others now control these areas. The greedy SUV mentality spirals in yet more convoluted ways. It ascends twirlingly into the sky through the metropolitan smog. To find the fine branches is challenging. The ADHD epidemic amongst the artistic represents a last chance, unless they are taken advantage of.
