The term cultus deorum was defined by Roman philosopher and polymath Cicero as 'the cultivation of the gods'. Approximately four hundred years before Emperor Constantine the Great's conversion to Christianity, this would refer specifically to pagan polytheism. Cultish codes have been a central component of all belief systems throughout history, manifesting themselves in various ritualistic guises. Prayer, sacrifice, offerings and ceremonial actions in relation to symbolic signs, dates and places, compounded by repetition, come to define any individual cult by its most essential process, that of worship. Each artist in this presentation investigates the cult drive as an important component within their general practice.

Impressions of Youth in an Epoch of Death: The Beginnings and Ends of Vetjylien N'gyrz

In the window display of Kunstverein München

For the inaugural event in Kunstverein München's new Autumn series k.m codex, artists Veit Laurent Kurz and Julien Nguyen have created a special window display dedicated to their fictitious character, the crypto-polymath Vetjylien N'gyrz.  

The first iteration of N'gyrz was the basis for the exhibition 'Flowers of Paranoia' in Frankfurt earlier this year, where the character - an ongoing collaborative project by Kurz and Nguyen - was introduced as an enduring influence for the apocryphal occult-band Servants Order ov Ancient Psychik Youth (S.O.A.P.Y). Following this, the artists use Kunstverein München's window display as an appendix to their false historicisation of N'gyrz in the literary vein of mythoposeia – a genre of expansive mythology to works of fiction 

An aged rock wall is installed as the backdrop for materials relating to the character's early life as a botanist on the cusp of a formative moment that leads him to perverse thought and experimentation. Fashioned in the style of a grotto or early Christian catacomb, the display is infused with rusty tech, scepters and a veneration icon of a young N'gyrz.

Founded by Mark Mangion in 2011, Parallel Borders is an extensive cross-field collaborative platform designed as an itinerant extension of Malta Contemporary Art.  Reflecting upon geopolitical and spatial narratives and physical borders via cyber, public and other accessible structures, a series of collaborations were initiated in 2012, generating a discourse with a diversity of artists and practitioners from other fields, invited to contribute to an explorative platform of site-specific fieldwork in various regions around the world. A journey was embarked upon, creating a foundation for historical research and anthropological mapping, storytelling and geo-political cultural examination against a backdrop of a deflating capitalism, environmental instability, technological revolution and ideas and disputes of borders; physical, territorial, scientific, philosophical.

The first edition of Parallel Borders, Monuments & Shrines to Capitalism proposes a collaboration with 8 artists in 8 cities in Europe beginning at the end of 2012. This cross-border project questions ideas of consumption and power, protest and awakening, pilgrimage and fracture, architecture, monument and shrine reflecting a decay in western culture propelled by an addiction to capitalism. Commencing in Athens, a journey to Reykjavik via stops in many of the most significant cultural, political, historical and financial cities of Europe was embarked upon marking a cacophonous and politically engaged fault line from South East to North West Europe. Questioning capitalist monoliths, a series of temporary projects were created engaging with public, private and virtual spaces.

Parallel Borders 2 / Landfall (2014 -) proposes a series of parallel platforms composed of visual and textual contributions, site-specific projects and collaborations with artists, architects, writers, filmmakers and other contemporary practitioners whose research and work is connected to the Middle East. Reflecting upon complexities of borders and territoriality, referencing a multitude of rich and diverse historical contexts, this collective platform questions ideas of physical and metaphorical narratives via collaborative and discursive meditations on this land and people founded upon relationships to archiving of historical, visual and philosophical connections to specificity of time, place and culture.

Chronicling ideas of architecture and community, power and fracture and powerful symbols representing the landscape in harmony and conflict with social and political urbanization, a visual and textual trajectory is created. Mapping spaces and narratives through stories and documents, Parallel Borders manifests the physical in virtual flux as a borderless and accessible platform setting out to interrogate parameters of the designed, democratised and social nature of digital space through a cumulative, adaptable and renewable structure.

For The Tip Buckley exhibits just one site-responsive work entitled: 'PAUL SCHOLES (A design for life)' (2014). His characteristically playful approach to the commission sees the surface of the vitrine itself being used as the arena for display, rather than the space which its existence encapsulates (and which has been left conspicuously empty). The work consists of the three opening sentences from the Wikipedia summery of Roald Dahl's 'The Twits' (1979) being applied to the glass of the vitrine in vinyl lettering. The title of the work makes reference to Manchester United's iconic ex-midfielder, Paul Scholes, who, rumor has it, keeps around 40 – 50 animals in his home at any one time.

Although visually somewhat different from many recent works, like all that Buckley produces, this is a work that is designed to activate a complex critical agenda, provoking considerations around the power/inadequacy of art and authorship (his own work included) within the terrain of culture and politics, and the nihilism of trying to find an equivalence of things balanced against a plea for an ethical discrimination between things. It is an approach to creation that is difficult as it is accessible, that is as important as it is irreverent.

Unter Stichworten wie Sonische Kunst (Sonic Art) oder Transmission Art entwickeln seit einigen Jahren bildende Künstlerinnen und Künstler ein erneuerten Verständnis des Akustischen in der bildenden Kunst.

Einige nehmen dabei bewusst Bezug auf frühe Überlegungen des amerikanisch-australischen Kunsttheoretikers Douglas Kahn („Anmaßung der Musik"). Andere erspüren ein Fehl-Lesen und Miss-Sehen ihres Schaffens auf Grund einer musikalischen Umklammerung und suchen deshalb
nach Möglichkeiten der ästhetischen Befreiung.

Dies ist unser Ausgangspunkt zur Ausrichtung der ersten Einzelausstellung in München des Frankfurter Künstlers Bernhard Schreiner (*1971 in Mödling bei Wien). Schreiner ist einem breiteren Kunstpublikum vor allem durch seine gemeinsame Arbeit mit Thomas Bayrle bekannt, zum Beispiel zur documenta13 in Kassel, oder zuletzt durch seine Sound-Installation „The Encryption Garden" im Frankfurter Städel Museum in Zusammenarbeit mit Alan B. Brock-Richmond. Die Ausstellung im Münchner Kunstraum will nicht den kollaborativen Aspekt seines Werkes, sondern Bernhard Schreiners Überlegungen zum Akustischen in den Vordergrund stellen. An Hand Schreiners sonischer, raumfüllender Arbeitsweise soll die grundsätzlichere Frage diskutiert werden: Was macht die bildende Kunst mit dem Hören, und warum verträgt sich das nicht mit der Musik?

Neben einer Auswahl an Papierarbeiten und Plastiken im Parterre der Ausstellung zeigt Bernhard Schreiner im Obergeschoss eine eigens für den Kunstraum realisierte neue Arbeit: „Power Supply" (Netzanschluss). Unterschiedliche Volt und Ampere-Stärken handelsüblicher Netzteile in Kombination mit unterschiedlichen Typen von Lautsprechern erzeugen immer andere Ergebnisse. Flächige, knisternde, rhythmisch klickende Tonstrukturen erinnern an das Klangvokabular zeitgenössischer elektro-akustischer Musik, ohne jedoch deren konservative Logik von Komposition oder Instrument zu übernehmen.

Die Ausstellung wird gefördert von der Hypo-Kulturstiftung und dem Kulturreferat der Landeshauptstadt München.

But in what remains of the international urban scene, architecture still refuses to admit it hasn't been modern since the early 20th century. Enter Ickles, Etc. Helming Los Angeles's most misunderstood info-architecture practice is Henries Ickles, "the man without self-concept." Eine große, Blattwerk  abstrahierende Schaufenster-Arbeit, Leuchtkästen mit figurativen Scherenschnitten und Papierstichen sowie aus den Figuren entwickelte filmische Schattenspiele ergänzen sich zu einer raumgreifenden Installation.

In der FAZ beschrieb Christoph Schütte die Ausstellung sowie den Werdegang der Künstlerin in einem am Tag der Vernissage veröffentlichten Artikel, den Sie im Anhang dieser Mail finden. Und das Journal Frankfurt meinte: "Das 1822-Forum zeigt, wie eine gute Ausstellung auszusehen hat." Das Fazit der Ausstellungsbesprechung: "Geradezu magisch: Valentina Stanojev erschafft

fantastische Bildwelten."

Das Plakatmotiv von Valentina Stanojev wurde soeben vom Museum of New Art (MONA) in Armada / Michigan für eine Ausstellung künstlerischer Selbstportraits ausgewählt.

Geöffnet ist das 1822-Forum am Freitag, 12. September, von 14 bis 22 Uhr sowie am Wochenende (13. / 14.9.) von 11 bis 18 Uhr. Am Freitagabend wird Valentina Stanojev selbst in der Ausstellung sein.

It is said of strays, strays are staid Gods in reverse.

Glory to god for the strength of strays.

Somebody told me once

the dogs in the guise of strangers from afar

dress up in handbags and visit cities.

One must be kind.

Great chains and hounds in pretty hearses 

The sandmen tether sandstones to their teary eyes.

Chain mail the length of quarterlies or spam.

Like trees they bark.

They parkplatz. Their ass is parked.

Jurassic park.

Blessed be dogs.

Some times they wake

With glass rays in their i's.

Life is hard being a shard.

One shouldn't mind.

They raze their own bed heads.

BUFF ist unser erstes kollektives Ausstellungsprojekt. Wir teilen uns Arbeit und Autorschaft und operieren als Gruppe mit einer Verbindung aus Versatzstücken, Relikten und Spuren Bildender Kunst und Graffiti. Dabei findet unterschiedliches vorgefundenes Material Verwendung in Installationen, Tafelbildern, Videoperformances, Fotografie und Kunst am Bau.

Das Kollektiv hat sich aus nahe liegenden Gründen dafür entschieden, Anleihen aus der Subkultur zu beziehen. Alle drei Mitglieder haben wie viele andere Jugendliche seit den frühen 90ern Graffiti verfolgt und zugunsten anderer Tätigkeiten, die legal und scheinbar altersgemässer waren (Architektur- bzw. Kunststudium), teilweise aufgegeben. Die Aufgabe folgte vor allem aus der Kosten-Nutzen-Rechnung zwischen gesellschaftlicher Anschlussfähigkeit dieser Tätigkeit und ihrer Form. Insofern wurde und werden einige Formen von Graffiti als Subkultur abgewertet, da sie im Verhältnis zu der Öffentlichkeit, die sie generieren, zu einfach und zu subjektiv erscheinen. Unser Kollektiv arbeitet daher an einem Formgelenk, das rohe Graffiti-Versatzstücke in die Kunst transportiert und diese unter medialen und formalen Möglichkeiten von Kunstwerken behandelt. Dieses Formgelenk soll beides auf Augenhöhe bringen und in der umgekehrten Richtung funktionieren, so dass Praktiken aus der Geschichte der Bildenden Kunst bis hin zu zeitgenössischen Verfahren im Feld der sogenannten Subkultur behandelt werden können.

Der Titel der Debutausstellung BUFF bedeutet im Graffiti-Jargon ein illegal gesprühtes Bild zu entfernen oder abzuputzen. Dem folgend besteht eine der Arbeiten aus vorgefundenen Fliesen, die zu einem Tafelbild arrangiert sind. Bemalt und putzt man die Baukeramik, bleibt der Eingriff in dem Fugenraster erhalten. Das Bild scheint sich für unser Gestaltempfinden hinter den Fliesen, wo eigentlich kein Bildraum ist, fortzusetzen.

The garden of the Städel Museum was the venue for one month, until 31 August, for the sound installation The Encryption Garden by Bernhard Schreiner and Alan B. Brock-Richmond. Acoustic waves are the focus too of Schreiner's third solo exhibition in our gallery, titled Application to Waves. Works in paper, sculpture and video will be presented.

Created without the use of a camera, the experimental photography (cyanotypes) series Heterodyne, for example, brings to mind large watercolours. However, the fine, intensely blue lines and circles originate from the effects of light. A laser pointer circled in the dark for several hours over the photosensitive paper. The impulse for the extraordinary circular motions came from the rhythm of a speaker diaphragm projected onto the laser pointer. Each sheet of the series represents a correspondingly different frequency basis, resulting in quite distinctive imagery.

From 24 September, the renowned Kunstraum in Munich will be showing a solo exhibition of new sound works by Bernhard Schreiner.
