Cosmology, multiverses, extraterrestrial life, cosmic horror, posthumanism, interspecies, time travel, metaphysics, extrapolation, speculation, utopias, dystopias, fiction, non-fiction, science. It is an uncanny and overwhelming feeling to think about outer space, its black holes, its abyss – a feeling in which rationality is overcome by the deeply seductive potential of the imagined. Science fiction is not only a way to create fictional narratives and aestheticised images around a field that is far beyond our comprehension but also an extended space of possibilities in science, technology, society and culture. Unlike reality science fiction doesn't have to follow parameters like time and space. The exhibition focuses on how science, fiction and their encounter might be materialised or performed within a contemporary (art) context.

The invited artists deal with concrete or abstract images of this (or another) cosmos and forms of utopia and dystopia: stereometrically in Sandra Kranich's drawings of space-related architectural forms, explosively in Sóley Ragnarsdóttir's large scale paintings on paper which present transformations between machines and organisms, quasi-spiritually and post-rationally in Flaut M. Rauch's jelly paintings and multi-layered floor installation whereas transhumanist concerns in Simon Speiser's new digital prints combine technology and nature. Science // Fiction meet one another while exploring and defining boundaries anew.

The exhibition is accompanied by two events: writer Mark von Schlegell reading from his new novel Sundogz (2015) and a lecture by science historian Bjoern Schirmeier entitled Visions of space in space. A virtual archeology.

For the sequel exhibition World of Hope II, Holen presents four new works made from the face of CT-scanners, the machines that create tomographic images from computer-processed X-rays, allowing users to see inside biological objects without cutting. The component's gateway form is one the most recognizable in the fields of medicine and clinical imaging technology. Produced using the industrial tooling for the Siemens SOMATOM Force model, the parts have been either dressed in black fishnet stretch fabric or finished with Race Red and Black Sand Pearl car paint.

Alongside the exhibition, Holen launches the second issue of his serial publication ETOPS, an anthropology magazine focusing on specialized industries today. For this issue, the artist spoke in-depth with plastic surgeons and pornography professionals. The Race Red in the exhibition is taken from pornographic actress Kota Skye's convertible Ford Mustang. Featured on the cover of ETOPS II, 21-year-old Skye—who recently changed her name from Dakota because of its likeness to a famous sunflower seed brand—talked with Holen in California about the psychology of pushing the body to its limits to create a successful media personality. Black Sand Pearl is the color of the Toyota Corolla the artist rented from Midway Car Rental in Los Angeles, where he explored the daily lives of experts who blur the distinction between the natural and the artificial.

Dispossession, an official collateral event of 56th Venice Biennale

European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016 is proud to announce Dispossession, an official collateral event of 56th Venice Biennale. The exhibition, which will take place in the Palazzo Doná Brusa on Campo San Polo, is one of the first international projects of the next year's cultural capital of Europe and announces Wrocław's cooperation with Dresden and Lviv. Taking as its departure point the city's history of displacements, the exhibition intertwines historic and contemporary dimension of dispossession.

Before the War, Wrocław – then Breslau – was one of the biggest German cities with population around 600 000 people, only a small fraction them speaking polish. Most of the civilians were forced to leave following Hitler's order of turning the city into a fortress in the end of the War. Thousands died during the journey westward, many more reached Dresden, which had become haven to over one million refugees before it was bombed by Allies few weeks later. The reshaping of European borders agreed during the Potsdam conference meant that newly renamed Wrocław was to a large extent populated by Poles arriving from the Eastern Borderlands that had become part of the USSR.

A historical axis of displacements – Lviv-Wroclaw-Dresden – sketched out here outlines the exhibition's field of research when thinking about contemporary migration. In February this year number of people displaced as a result of the conflict in Eastern Ukraine reached one million. Dispossession is an everyday event in a supposedly peaceful European Union. Each day hundreds of people embark on a precarious journey through the Mediterranean to reach its north shore in an attempt to escape wars, poverty, humiliation and hunger. All of them abandon their homes with recognition that they might never return or might have nothing to return to. The notion of home is central for this exhibition, both in relation to its symbolic and spatial meaning. A home that is lost and a house that needs to be occupied. Dispossession does not mean only depriving somebody of their property, but also pertains to freeing from evil spirits, an exorcism that is meant to oust unwanted energies. The exhibition is guided by the recognition of a universal and atemporal dimension of dispossession in its psychological and material manifestations. It is in his lost and sought sense of belonging that we analyse a multi-layered relationship between space and identity.

VERSUCHSLABORE ZU KRITIK UND PRAXIS IN ZEITEN DES INTERNETS

Vom 30. April – 10. Mai 2015 veranstalten das HATE Magazin im Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien in Berlin mit Unterstützung des CCCs einen Kongress, der sich auf theoretischer und praktischer Ebene mit Interventionsmöglichkeiten im Internetzeitalter beschäftigt.

Seit den 1990er Jahren ist vom Ende der Geschichte (Francis Fukuyama) und vom Ende der großen Erzählungen (Jean-François Lyotard) die Rede. In den letzten zwanzig Jahren wurde der Prozess sogar noch beschleunigt. Jede noch so kleine Utopie, jede noch so partikulare Subkultur wurde von den Marketingmaschinerien einverleibt, so dass wir heute die von Toni Negri und Michael Hardt in „Empire" diagnostizierte „Welt ohne Außen" als alternativlosen, klaustrophoben körperlichen Dauerzustand spüren können. Mitverantwortlich dafür ist unter anderem die technische Innovation Internet, die nach und nach zum massenhaft genutzten Werkzeug geworden ist und das soziale, geistige und kulturelle Leben nachhaltig verändert hat. Informationen über jedes Ereignis und jede Neuigkeit sind umgehend in Form von Videos, Bildern, Tweets, Statusmeldungen oder Artikeln im Netz verfügbar.

Das ist der Punkt an dem der Kongress der Möglichkeiten: Die veränderten technischen Voraussetzungen und das konstatierte Ende der großen Erzählungen sind der Beginn einer neuen Form von Lebensentwürfen und ihrer Beschreibungen. Der Kongress versucht Fragen zu stellen und zu beantworten: Wie können wir gestalten? Welche Rückschlüsse lassen sich aus Erfahrungen mit den veränderten Bedingungen machen? Wie sieht eine konkrete Interventionspraxis in der digitalen Zukunft aus? Während des Kongresses wird HATE#10 als digitale Ausgabe produziert. Das Heft wird zudem in Druck gehen und soll im Idealfall ein Denkanstoß und Ausgangspunkt für die kritische Gestaltung der Zukunft sein.

Schwäbischer Kunstsommer: Bewerbungsschluss für Meisterklasse Fotografie mit Nathalie Grenzhaeuser

Irsee (pm). Die Meisterklasse Fotografie im diesjährigen Schwäbischen Kunstsommer vom 1. bis 9.8. leitet Nathalie Grenzhaeuser. Unter dem Thema „Bild und Gedächtnis“ wird es darum gehen, wie man die eigene materielle und emotionale Wahrnehmung eines Ortes in die Fotografie übertragen kann. Bis zum 15.5.15 ist Zeit, eine Bewerbung mit Arbeitsproben einzusenden.

Grenzhaeuser studierte Interdisziplinäre Kunst an der Frankfurter Städelschule und war Meisterschülerin von Hermann Nitsch. Seit 1999 zeigt sie ihre Arbeiten in Ausstellungen weltweit. Außerdem erhielt sie zahlreiche Auszeichnungen. Das Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg sprach ihr kürzlich ein Fellowship zu, das die Künstlerin gleich nach dem Schwäbischen Kunstsommer zum Alfred-Wegener-Institut auf die norwegische Inselgruppe Spitzbergen führen wird.

Der Schwäbische Kunstsommer ist eine interdisziplinäre Sommerakademie der Schönen Künste. Er wird seit fast 30 Jahren von der Schwabenakademie in Kloster Irsee veranstaltet, einem zum Tagungszentrum umgestalteten ehemaligen Benediktinerstift mitten im Allgäuer Voralpenland. Die Irseer Sommerakademie spricht sowohl professionelle Künstler als auch fähige Laien jeden Alters an. Wer sich intensiv mit künstlerischer Fotografie beschäftigen will, zugleich aber auch den Austausch zwischen den Künsten schätzt, wird in Irsee beste Bedingungen finden.

Bewerber/innen, die die künstlerischen Anforderungen erfüllen, aber nicht über die nötigen finanziellen Mittel zur Teilnahme verfügen, können ein Stipendium beantragen. Unter dem Titel Garde zeigt Franziska Kneidl in den beiden Räumen des Ausstellungsortes Kornhäuschen in der Säulenhalle am Schloss in Aschaffenburg überlebensgroße Malereiskulpturen. Aktuell sind Arbeiten von Franziska Kneidl auch im Frankfurter Museum für Moderne Kunst MMK 2 (bis zum 14. Juni) zu sehen und bis zum 30. Mai in unserer Galerie.

Die 1805 erbaute Säulenhalle mit den beiden von außen einsehbaren Eckrisaliten schließt den Schlossplatz nach Süden hin ab . Der Name entstand, weil den Bauern des Marktes gestattet wurde, bei schlechtem Wetter dort ihr Korn zu lagern. Die großartige, quadratische Schlossanlage selbst wurde 1605-14 als zweite Residenz des Erzbischhofs von Mainz hoch über dem Main erbaut und bietet, wie der gesamte Schlossplatz, einen fantastischen Fernblick auf den Main.

Franziska Kneidls ungegenständliche Malerei weckt – raumgreifend über große Ringe drapiert – Assoziationen zu Kleidern und Roben, zu Hüllen und Körpern. Die als Bildträger dienenden, transparenten Folien aus speziellem Kunststoff öffnen Einblicke in tiefere Schichten dieser hoch sensiblen, gleichsam großzügigen Malerei und reflektieren partiell das einfallende Tageslicht.

Die künstlerischen Leiterinnen Anne Hundhausen und Doris Kroth freuen sich mit uns auf Ihr Kommen!
