Lena Henke, My History of Flow

Lena Henke, My History of Flow

Curated by Anna Goetz

During vast field trips across Europe and the US, artist Lena Henke and curator Anna Goetz have followed the tracks of artists who have pursued radical garden and landscape projects. Henke has archived these visions of spatial outdoor arrangements presented since the 16th century. For her project at SALTS, she will use water to change the interior and exterior architecture of the exhibition space and transform it into a comprehensive sculptural environment. Henke will also present new absurd works referencing New York's famous skyline symbol, the water tank and her extensive catalog of utopic outdoor sites–some of which still exist, others forgotten or never realised.

Buck Ellison - Modesty

Buck Ellison
Modesty
Jun 10 to Jul 2, 2016

We are proud to present Modesty, Buck Ellison’s first solo exhibition in Berlin.

A velvety leaved cabbage, soft skin, reflective car finish: in Ellison’s photographs, smooth surfaces appear in all sorts of different modes. The portraits of plants, shot in organic gardens of Californian private schools, may come off as idyllic, but at the same time they appear overly sterile. The same, almost disturbingly artificial character also inhabits the representations of people, casting doubt on the authenticity of poses and groupings that look a little too normal. Evoking a slightly oppressive feeling in the viewer these seem reminiscent of ubiquitous advertising images in public spaces culled from stock photography. A series of still lifes, showing the offerings of fish counters at Berlin’s Kaufhaus des Westens, references not only to the increasing aestheticization of food through advertising and amateur photography, but also the aspiration to a better life through a healthy, supposedly responsible diet. The pastel-colored animals from diverse freshwater and saltwater waters or from breeding ponds, often previously frozen and thawed due to long transport routes, are here presented nicely for the buyer, side by side.

Buck Ellison (*1987) lives and works in Los Angeles. He graduated from a master class at the Städelschule, Frankfurt in 2014 and received a B.A. from Columbia University, New York in 2010. His work has been shown at Mathew Gallery, New York; Park View, Los Angeles; Galerie Balice Hertling, New York, and at the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles.

In ihrer neuesten abendfüllenden Arbeit THE ANIMALS werden Szenen aus Jacques Tourneurs Film „Cat People“ (1942) nachgespielt.

Garden Show proposes a metaphor of urban parks. They have been transcendental spaces, corrupt spaces, lonesome spaces, spaces from which the powerful have extracted authority. They are leisure spaces, common spaces, pleasure spaces, spaces defined by a ceaselessly plodding public. They are open and display signs of no-admittance. Parks are a means to understand the progression of an American rhetoric. Like a dream, they register a migration of people and narratives. They suspend an American paradox between the urban and pastoral. They are an on-again-off-again romance with democracy.

Frederick Law Olmsted described his project, Central Park, as “the lungs of the city.” At the time, the city commonly ascribed the cause of poor health to the “miasma” of the city—New York’s vapors caused a contagious delirium of capital that affected an individual at will. Perhaps the air never cleared. There have been numerous migrations throughout the metropolis, and it is often challenging to differentiate sequestration from continual intramural emigration. Like art, however, the parks translate these conditions through a constitutional reverie, which tests and gauges how meaning is made within this democratic garden.

THE PRINTED SEA

Elif Saydam (*1985 in Calgary, Kanada) lebt in Frankfurt a. Main.

MICHAEL PFROMMER

MICHAEL PFROMMER
Ausstellungseröffnung
27. Mai 2016, 19.00 - 21.00
28. Mai - 9. Juli

When Michael Pfrommer was a child he ran his arm through the glass pane of a door while trying to escape his father. The glass cut the back of his left hand so deep and clean it hardly bled, and he could see his tendons still intact in the mouth of the wound tugging when he moved his fingers. The cut, for whatever reason, refused to heal, and when the stitches came out three weeks later the skin immediately pulled apart. For a number of reasons I figure that a door is more to Michael than just an object to paint on. He’s made an image beyond the surface, a place you arrive at without stepping forward and crossing a threshold, and in doing so he might in some way offer the exit he once sought. A door failed him. It became the sort of punishment he was trying to escape, and now he’s gone and filled a room with pictures on doors that lead nowhere, close nothing, and stand ajar in our midst to look at and beyond. Affixed to the wall, they stand as tall as us, two sided, in conversation it seems, establishing a new order from every corner of the room.

On these doors he’s painted feet descending the staircase of my childhood home, mushrooms, and our daughter lost in the folds of a blanket. He’s painted pants kneeling in the grass that he claims have fallen, pants that I’ve always thought were awaiting execution. He uses water a lot. Water, in endlessly malleable forms flood his pictures, drip down sidewalks, fall down stairs, fill and carry cups and mattresses. Water, which may be at times impossible to separate from the sky. He’s painted waves that meet the shore like a rippling sheet. Waves, that in his paintings and drawings sometimes cover the bodies of people. People that remind us of the world in which we live and the spaces we define. In his pictures Michael both simply and painstakingly depicts life, elaborating on it without an evident agenda. He cites and recites, images and situations we remember collectively, things that happen around us, to us, between us. Clothes, bodies, streets, still lives, everything he works with become symbols that speak baring the evidence of this time and place, the life we lead as folk with infinitely-individual common interests, and sentiments.

While riding my bike one night, I swerved to avoid a glove that was lost in the middle of the street, because I was overwhelmed by the impulse not to drive over a hand. We navigate life in response to the visual cues that we’ve learned to interpret, and just as successfully, learned to consciously forget. These are the only tools required to consider Michaels work, they are the tools that he prefers no matter what the outcome. We initially see in pictures, what we cannot help not seeing. I believe that the impulse evoked on first encounter dictates our desires and our intentions as we unconsciously define the world that we’re confronted with.

When Arshile Gorkys wife, Agnes Magruder, saw her husband one day from the kitchen window leaving his barn studio with a rope slung over his shoulder, heading up the hill toward a tree to hang himself, she sent the children running after him and told them to hurry because daddy was building them a swing.

BENJAMIN HORNS - OPENING WEDNESDAY, MAY 25, 18: 00-21: 00, GALLERIA FEDERICO VAVASSORI, VIA GIORGIO GIULINI 5, 20123 MILAN

BENJAMIN HORNS

May 25 – June 25, 2016
Galleria Federico Vavassori

Opening reception: Wednesday, May 25, 18:00 - 21:00
Gallery hours: Monday - Friday, 11:00 - 18:00

A loft is defined by absence of vertical structural supports piercing the floorplates. It is one of the few domestic architectural typologies which is not defined by use but by a strict structural nomos: its emptiness promises flexibility and its value increases by how much emptiness its engineering virtuosism allows. Most other domestic typologies are described by gendered division of house labour, for example many 18th century french architecture treaties attempted the codification of the bourgeois apartment as a function of the predicted social relations of its inhabitants: served and servant spaces, kitchens, master bedroom, women’s quarters, laundry rooms, distribution, and so on. The indeterminacy of the loft, its purely utilitarian structural definition, seems to allow new domestic relations, a carte blanche to define novel household compounds: a place to live and work, a space to party, a space for polyamorous relationships, a space for single men.

For Aldo Rossi the genealogy of an architectural type is defined by the sum of all its experiences and memories together with its formal rather than material qualities. So if the structural definition is not enough, attempting to follow the evolution of all experiences and memories proves to be a rather imprecise exercise, a necessarily subjective journey. The word loft originates from the germanic luftand the dutch lucht, both meaning air/sky, thus identifying the loft as a space directly under the roof of a building, the closest to the expanse of the atmosphere above, one that, arguably in any building tradition, maximises the space available in the floorplan by virtue of being an interstitial space between the vertical supports of the floor/s below and the structure of the roof above.

One could be tempted to bypass the etymological definition and place the origins of the loft closer to the typology of the Dutch Canal House and the Venetian Palazzo. Both have to negotiate the spatial needs of a trade economy based on 1/2 Galleria Federico 2/2 Vavassori water transportation, therefore offer both ample space for storage and equally ample space for reception. The Venetian Palazzo more than the Dutch House has developed a fully formed and consistent typology, evident in the element of the portego. This is an oblong space which connects the water door with the street entrance of a Palazzo; at ground level it is also a space to store goods and boats, while in the floors above it constitutes the longitudinal focus of the house, a large salon for reception, dining and partying. It is only here that we can connect the definition of the modern loft as columnless space with a direct connection to its current use (experiences and memories) and its historical precedent. The portego is an abstract matrix which connects vectors of production and reproduction; in a strikingly similar way the canonical New York (formerly New Amsterdam) Loft is a space appropriated from industrial production to gestate the unholy marriage of life and labour, officiated by the artist.

Where the portego reaches the sky differentiating its functional emptiness on the vertical axis the New York Loft (NYL) establishes a gradient of functions on the horizontal plate: hot and cold zones, work and rest zones, and so on. From XVIII century Venice to XX century New York City the material and economic conditions have determined the emergence of a precise typology directly influenced by movements of capital, both ending up in longitudinal voids surrounded by exposed bricks and/or stucco, but what is most visible is how the amass of experiences and memories coagulates in real estate formulas: typology is the ultimate expendable currency for an economy driven by experience.

BlockUniverse - A Biologically Immortal Living Being Can Still Die - 31st of May - 8pm

A Biologically Immortal Living Being Can Still Die
Lina Hermsdorf
Tuesday May, 31st - 8pm
Bellenden Road, Peckham

The Hydra myth tells us a story of a many-headed serpent that has the ability to regenerate lost heads. As soon as one of its heads is cleaved off, Hydra re-grows the lost body part. Hydra is also the name of a freshwater animal with extraordinary regenerative abilities. The genus stem cells appear to have a capacity for indefinite self-renewal. Hydra stands for organisms that  do not age or die of old age. Current researchers from the trans-humanism movement circulate the idea of wanting to cure ageing. According to those thinkers, ageing falls into the category of a disease that needs to be rectified. The actual causes of ageing still remain unknown. A Biologically Immortal Living Being Can Still Die looks at this subject matter by confronting the varying philosophical and scientific meanings of ageing with the ubiquitous desire of society not to senescence.

Performed by Henry Babbage.

Lina Hermsdorf lives and works in London and Frankfurt am Main. Her practice is concerned with the intrinsic question of what one can define as living. In her work, Hermsdorf creates situations that encompass and play with the ways we perceive, communicate and process information as cognitive beings. She studied theatre at the University in Giessen and fine arts at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. Her performative works and installations have been shown at Minibar, Stockholm (2015), Yvonne Lambert, Berlin (2015), Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (2015), Rowing Projects, London (2015), and Taylor Macklin, Zurich (2015), among other venues.
The 2016 festival explores the theme of ’The Future Perfect’ - presenting performances which ask how we construct the idea of ‘self’ in a technologically sophisticated society - and how identities can become transformed through body enhancement, ageing and digital technology. Block Universe 2016 will include a number of UK premieres and several new commissions.
