"In my case, I am standing in front of a locker, trying to get a better understanding of what is happening around me. „Are you really gonna stand there staring at me all the way from across the room?“ We don´t seem to think of dynamite things to say to each other which
(in our case) doesn’t bother any of us.
Discomfort in my body yet. Squeezing all my gestures into a small delivery box and moving on. Still... I am lined up in her sight.

I am starting to whistle away gently to myself, raising an acoustic protective film around me. While walking around and casting a net wide just to catch the situation, I am realizing a cluster of people well known. Kind of eased I discontinue whistling and dispel my shell. Time to caress my catch ... here we go, I have no idea what is going on."

Eliza Douglas - My Gleaming Soul / I am a Fireball

Eliza Douglas
My Gleaming Soul / I am a Fireball

May 20th to July 2nd, 2017
Opening: May 19th, 2017, from 6 pm

From May 20th to July 2nd the Nassauische Kunstverein Wiesbaden brings together two series of paintings by Eliza Douglas, My Gleaming Soul and I am a Fireball.

While the works on view share an interest in the genres of painterly practice, most notably portraiture, they do not find inspiration in any particular artist of the past. Nor does Douglas locate her paintings in ideas of the contemporary by drawing upon visual tropes such as digital technology. Her achievement here is to make works that look fresh without needing to be trendy; that is, she develops a vocabulary which allows history to appear without collapsing painting into a historical problem.

This balancing act is more difficult to achieve than one might imagine. With My Gleaming Soul you’ll find a series of headless figures. Or really, these are not figures so much as the total inversion of what we expect from a painted body: no sturdiness or dimension, with only the appendages – hands, and sometimes feet – earning a detailed render. In these works Douglas is not searching for any formal coherence. The paintings are no more figurative than abstract; they are no more gestural than they are procedural. In fact, she is careful to cancel out the compositional elements such that no clear identity resolves for the viewer. For example, the figurative components – the hands and feet – enact a kind of subtraction on the formal level in the sense that they disrupt any straight abstract readings and force the lines to oscillate between figurative and decorative interpretations.

This technique continues in the series of portraits entitles I am a Fireball. Her subjects, all young men posing shirtless, look out at the viewer with blank demeanors, and are situated in rooms that lack personal details but have been decorated too tastefully to be considered bureaucratic. What is unique to this portrait series is that Douglas paints people without any interest in their individuality. Indeed, in a few of the works the traditional grammar of portraiture is reversed: a potted fern occupies the foreground of a room, while the portrait of a young man appears as a mural – flattened even within the imaginary space of the painting – on one of the background walls. You might say that, by rendering these various figures, she outlines the conditions of a more impersonal event, the kind of pre-transitive space in which subjectivity develops as just one item among others.

The stoics talked about ataraxia, a kind of poise and tranquility that is found by eschewing all that is not necessary. This concept gets as close as possible to capturing the feel of her technique. She paints without didacticism or conceptual arrogance, instead communicating through the modesty of a small set of formal elements. Indeed, her work is almost celebratory in the way that it lets go of painting’s historical burdens, humorously, and with buoyancy.

Lockers is a collective project that borns as a question towards the public and private space and how to deal with it. Playing with the institution as the weapon that legitimizes the artist, with Lockers, we will be exhibiting IN the institution but not UNDER the terms of the institution.

The idea is to temporary appropriate the simplest and easiest space that the museum offers in this dichotomy between the public and the private: the lockers, and by this action, use a “public” place, as the museum is supposed to be (In the case of the Stedelijk, the authorities’ own efforts to adopt an arm’s-length approach led the city council to privatise the museum in 2006) , to do a private exhibition of a very subjective selection of artists. By this action the aim is to question the power of those big institutions and how the context where you read the work might completely change the reading of itself, since even it is in a museum the work will be in a locker; but maybe, if you are capable to abstract yourself enough, you will be able to read the locker as a white cube, being the work again contextualized different and being on what it might be it’s “perfect space”

Each artist will have a different locker that will be opened by the visitors on request for the key. This second volume of the project is held in Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in after a first edition at MNCARS (Madrid, Spain) in January 2017 and has the intention to be a format that can be repeated again in different cities and museums around the world. Documentation from the first edition can be found here:

Screening and discussion with Jol Thomson and Dan Meththananda

Screening and discussion with Jol Thomson and Dan Meththananda

Curzon Cinema followed by a discussion in the Centre for Research Architecture, RHB 312

Please join us for a screening of G24|0vßß (2016), a film by the Berlin-based artist and cultural researcher Jol Thomson.

Shot at the Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in central Italy, the film is set in a larger apparatus that descends into a thermal zone near absolute zero and sits in a clear field of cosmic silence — the required environment for rendering neutrinos detectable. As Jol would put it, neutrino detection becomes an “expression of entanglement in the liminal spaces between subatomic particles, an ice shelf, digital sensors, human labor and curiosity, equations, hypotheses, and vast technological and bureaucratic architectures."

Following the screening at Curzon, the session will continue at the Centre for Research Architecture (RHB 312) where Jol will present new raw material from his recent expedition to Siberia at the laboratory-landscape, neutrino sensing device, the Gigaton Volume Detector at Lake Baikal. As part of this presentation and in the vein of the artist's diffracted research, he and curator-writer Dan Meththananda open an "entangled" discussion around, and from within Jol's post-human ethnographic film practice.

Hosted by the free Seminar and is co-organized by Mahan Moalemi.
