In a two-part film based lecture, Florian Wüst reflects on the notion of subculture in relation to shifting narratives of identity and gender, economy and media. The city of Berlin and its unique urban typology hereby figures as a stage and symbol for the ambivalent processes that revolve around subcultural definition, production and practice in an increasingly commercialised world. Starting with the late 1960s and the advent of new concepts of subjectivity, the films and film excerpts comprise a compelling selection of independent cinema, experimental shorts and video art.
