Wednesday, 28th September, 2011, 6:00pm  onwards

Participating Artists

Gabi Schillig (Germany)
Gabi's work aims to create temporary situations by developing material and textile interfaces that establish subversive and often absurd relationships between the body and its environment.

Masooma Syed (Pakistan)
Inspired by the non-material wealth of objects, Masooma works between playful assemblages of found material to minimal, morbid and quiet works.

The works will be on view at Khoj Studios till 8th October, 11am-7:30pm.

What A Night For A Knight

Karl Norin and Sam Siwe
Opening the 27th of September in Galleri Mejan, Stockholm
Curated by Oona-Lea von Maydell

Sitting in a forest, enjoying a nice, big bonfire in its full glory, always reminds me;
I never had a horse.
He said, he also never had a horse. But a dog.
Forgot his name but he was definitely good looking.
The adventure began.
Strange creatures approaching.
A group of people were performing a gig and all the anxiety disappeared.

The following high five seemed to last forever.

Never odd or even
A text spaced exhibition
curated by Solvej Helweg Ovesen

01. october 20. november, 2011
01. october 2011, 19:00 opening
01. october 20:00 and 22. october 20:00 performances

Never odd or even is a text-spaced exhibition that unfolds in mental and architectural chapters through perspectives created by textual artworks. The artworks presented derive from Concrete Poetry, Dadaist and Futurist Manifestos, as well as techniques of mind mapping. The exhibition is shaped as a book, formatted in spatial chapters that invite the visitors to become the co-authors. Imaginary space is rendered tangible through text and movement. Artworks appear as wall text, projection, spoken, enacted and filmed prose, activating the architectural space in ways that amplify the meaning of the words and the worlds inside. The point of departure of the exhibition and it's title comes from the legendary book and performance project, Never odd or even, 2005-2011, by Berlin-based artist Mariana Castillo Deball (Mexico, 1975). Her project consists in 'a book of unwritten books', 30 book covers designed by creative producers selected by the artist and published as one book. A new edition of the Never odd or even book has been invented and published (by Bom dia boa tarde boa noite) for this exhibition. The imagined content of these 'unwritten books' will be performed during the exhibition by well-known German authors like Ingo Niermann together with poets, theoreticians, and artists.

Opening Saturday, 24. September, 1700

The exhibition Lost Dog brings together four artists who live and work in Frankfurt-am-Main and study at the Städelschule. Their works are the product of a month-long residency the artists undertook in the center of Warsaw.

Taking inspiration from the zaginiony pies or “lost dog” leaflets that litter the city, the artists present differing, non-programmatic meditations on the themes of loss, ownership, and property that underlie the history of Warsaw. From the dissolution of the Duchy of Warsaw, to the renegotiation of borders after the Second World War, to the influx of Western capitalism after 1990, they investigate the problems at stake in a place so suspended between cultures and economies.

TESTING STAGE - A WINDOW TO PERFORMA NEW YORK
15 September – 01 October
HAU1,2,3

Live, current, transitory, temporary – theater and performance art combine a number of basic principles. Performance is an everyday concept for the theater, and is experiencing a boom in the Fine Arts – possibly because of the financial crisis, among other things. Both defy economic logic; they are either dependent on subsidies or,  like performances in the Fine Arts, exist on the edge of the art market, as a byproduct of commercial gallery openings, at biennales and in museums or in the art subculture. Performance Art can now point to a canon, a repertoire and a legacy – which is critically examined by the latest generation. Issues such as authenticity and repetition, truth and fiction, original and fake line up in the discussions surrounding performance art, which has now moved into a phase of its own museumization – as shown by the major Marina Abramovic retrospective “The Artist Is Present” at the MoMA in New York. What do members of the young generation think of this canon and where are they doing things differently? The younger generation’s image ofthe body is dominated by the media; and they only know their predecessors’ performances from jerky black-and-white videos. From the very beginning of the HAU we have stood before the artists – sometimes modestly, sometimes not – shown them our three theaters and said: “This is what we’ve got. What have you got?”That has led to a lot of cooperative projects, some of them were existing works which were placed in a different context by being brought into the theater, and some of them were new, made especially for our theaters. For the “Testing Stage” festival, the HAU has once more invited fine artists – this time to show their works in performative formats. What happens in the tense contrast between the white cube and the black box? We are interested in the historical side as well as in the spatial and architectural aspect. Along with new works by Keren Cytter, Phil Collins, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Ari Benjamin Meyers, Nevin Aladağ, Tobias Rehberger and Simon Fujiwara, we are holding an all-night Performance Night in two of our theaters as well as a night of music projects by fine artists.

ENGLISH PRESS RELEASE

Simon Fujiwara's own biography provides the basis for his performances and installations. In closely-woven narrative dramas about personal relationships, families, politics and history, Fujiwara continually takes on new roles as an archaeologist, architect, director and erotic novelist. For the first time, he presents "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," three of his performances as one grand narrative in three acts.

"The Mirror Stage" is an autobiographical piece, reconstructing Fujiwara's first confrontation with a work of Modern Art, which led to him becoming an artist himself. "Welcome to the Hotel Munber" focuses on Fujiwara's family history. His parents ran a hotel and bar in southern Spain during the Franco regimes in 1970s. Within this scenario, Fujiwara constructs an erotic story of repression and liberation, framed by the story of his own writer's block. In "The Personal Effects of Theo Grünberg," he searches for the person whose library of nearly 1000 books, lyric diaries, records, newspaper clippings and postcards he buys at a flea market. Attempting to reconstruct the man's life story from his belongings, Fujiwara goes on a journey which soon takes him into a labyrinth of reflections, dead ends and false leads – right around the world, from the Stasi headquarters in Berlin to the depths of the Amazon jungle. Fujiwara increasingly comes under the spell of Theodor Grünberg, the man of the 20th century.

"The Boy Who Cried Wolf" is commissioned by Performa 11, New York, SFMoMA and HAU Berlin.

DEUTSCHER PRESSETEXT

"Welcome to the Hotel Munber" rückt Fujiwaras Familiengeschichte in den Mittelpunkt. Jahrhunderts.

"The Boy Who Cried Wolf" ist eine Auftragsarbeit von Performa New York, SFMoMA und HAU Berlin.

'Run, comrade, the old world is behind you' is a series of 23 presentations of artists' work, screenings, talks and performances, one for each day that Kunsthall Oslo is open between 16.09.11 and 16.10.11. Artworks and films will remain installed in the gallery after their first appearance but, throughout its duration, 'Run, comrade...' will be a work in progress. The project will begin with a performance in an empty space and assemble day by day into a group exhibition. The exhibition will be incomplete until its final day, while several of the performance works will leave no trace behind.

'Run, comrade...' disrupts the usual gallery rhythm to present works that engage with the relationship between the past, the present and the future, or with questions of instability, of agency and of change. From Dan Wolgers' absurdist mechanical sculpture that does almost, but not quite, nothing at all, the show will expand through improvised music, sculpture and performance to include works that address contemporary events, and related political and economic questions, more directly.

ANDREI KOSCHMIEDER
"ANDROID KOSCHMIEDER"

SEPTEMBER 15 - OCTOBER 29, 2011
Opening reception September 15, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Foxy Production is pleased to present Andrei Koschmieder's inaugural New York solo exhibition ANDROID KOSCHMIEDER. The exhibited works hybridize the techniques of painting, sculpture, and digital imaging. Through a combination of epoxy resin, painterly inks, and enlarged digital images, Koschmieder translates the experience of contemporary technology into multi-layered, visual forms.

With their shifting, animated materiality and embedded marks resembling otherworldly fossils, the works coagulate into vibrantly colored sci-fi screens. Through an inventive process of enlarging digital images onto stained resin casts — Koschmieder prints out sections of an image onto foil and then presses them, still wet with ink, onto larger pieces of paper, which are then bathed in resin - digital space is eerily translated into gallery space.

Either hanging from custom-made clamps or wrapped together into human-scaled columns, the works are fluidly multi-dimensional in form: the wall pieces are spotlighted like projected film cels that draw out their skin-like transparency; the floor pieces appear almost hologrammatic in their modular construction. Their layering creates rich visual incidents as their digital imagery emerges from within their variously liquid, smooth, corrugated, or cracked resin surfaces.

The images implanted in Koschmieder's hybrids draw on advertisements of tech-gadgets as much as they do anatomical drawing, art history, and cybernetics. The artist focuses on the human hand, that base unit of the anatomical study, manual artistry, and touchscreen technology: the works show hands gliding through page after page of digital information in as much a dystopian operation as an enlightening one. The works juxtapose vivid luminous surfaces that seduce the viewer, with rough, razor-like edges that threaten those who dare to glide their fingers across them.

ANDREI KOSCHMIEDER (Frankfurt, Germany, 1980) lives and works in New York City. He holds an MFA from the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Frankfurt. Selected exhibitions include: Real Fine Arts, Brooklyn (2011); White Columns, New York; Johan Berggren Gallery, Malmö, Sweden (solo); Credenza, New York (solo); Cleopatra's, New York; 179 Canal, New York (all 2010); RGB LED, Seoul, South Korea; Johan Berggren Gallery, Malmö, Sweden; Pro Choice, Vienna, Austria; Neue Alte Brücke, Frankfurt (2009); Kunstverein St. Pauli, Hamburg, Germany; Literaturhaus, Frankfurt; and Hold & Freight, London (all 2008).
